The Ides of March



As a classics major and former Latin teacher, March 15 for me is always “The Ides of March”. I saw no reason to be wary, though. It is also the start of the indoor growing season. This is the day when I normally begin to sow the seeds for the warm weather crops like eggplants, peppers and tomatoes. Why March 15? Well, these plants can’t go outside and into the ground until night-time temperatures are consistently 50º or above. Here in Northern New Jersey that generally occurs around May 15, rarely before that and often later. The plants in question need a head start of about 8-10 weeks, ergo – March 15.

Rain was predicted for Friday, March 15, so I planned to use the indoor time organizing my new seed-starting set-up in the monastery basement. The so-called “Mud Room” was recently renovated and it is terrific. I still haven’t  managed to track down all my “stuff”, but there is enough to get started. One item that I miss is a heavy-duty hand-held ice scraper. I have used this to make the rows in the seed-starting containers. It was the perfect implement for that purpose*. The first thing I plant is eggplant, because it is the slowest growing. I have 6 different varieties in various shapes and colors. Work went smoothly and I was finished more quickly that I had expected.

Not only did it not rain, but the day turned out to be mostly sunny. By the afternoon, it was quite warm and I worked for two hours pruning in the abbey orchard. When I returned to the cottage around 4:00 p.m., I checked the indoor/outdoor thermometer; and, for the first time since I moved in, it was warmer outside than inside. Outside it was 68º while inside it was 66º. I took a quick shower and returned to the monastery for Mass and supper.




After dinner, I came back and began making a loaf of Irish Soda Bread. I am the delegated soda bread maker for the abbey. I had put the bread in the oven and was cleaning up when I heard a sound coming from outside. I walked over to the front door and peeked out. Sure enough, it was raining and there was some lightning and thunder. OK, I thought, and went back to cleaning up the kitchen. The next thing you know, the sound had become a roar and I realized that it was the wind howling. The wind was now blowing violently and the lightning was almost non-stop. I could hear the rain lashing the roof of the cottage. Then that sound changed and now it was hail hitting the roof. Then all the lights went out. With the glow of the phone, I found matches and lit the few candles that I had. It was time to abandon ship and head to the monastery where there was a generator and power.

But wait! What about the soda bread in the oven (electric!). I quickly covered it with foil and wrapped it in a towel. I grabbed what I needed for the night and made a dash for the car, leaving the darkened house behind. The lightning was unbelievable – it just never stopped. Fortunately the rain had eased up somewhat. As I slowly drove the darkened road, I was amazed that there were no trees or large limbs down. The road was covered with debris, but nothing major.

I reached the monastery and went straight to the kitchen. I quickly turned on one of the convection ovens and as soon as it was reasonably hot, I unwrapped the loaf and popped it into the oven. At this point, I could only guesstimate how much more time it needed. The bread was done in about 20 minutes. I cleaned up and poured myself a drink. It had been quite an adventure! By now the storm had passed. I made my way to my room in the monastery. I got into bed and watched one and a half episodes of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives before I turned out the light and fell asleep.






As is so often the case, the day following the storm was beautiful. The sun shone brightly despite a passing shower or two. It was obvious, though, that the cold front had come through. It was a Saturday, so we had Mass in the morning. After breakfast, I went down to the cottage to feed the cats. As soon as I got out of the car, I could hear the little generator going. So, we still had no power. I was just finishing feeding the cats when one of the maintenance crew showed up to check on the generator. That’s when I learned the full extent of last night’s storm.

Apparently, a pole carrying three transformers had snapped and fallen onto our retreat center and were on fire. A youth group that was in for the weekend had to be hastily evacuated. Fortunately, no one was hurt and everyone got out safely. The damage to the electrical system was severe, though. The power company estimated that it might be midnight at the earliest before the repairs were finished. So, I grabbed a few more things. It looked like I’d be spending another night in the monastery.



On this bright morning, it seemed like spring had arrived all at once. With spring’s arrival, however, all the spring chores that needed to be done also arrived. I chose to tackle the iris bed first. I spent the morning raking and weeding. After lunch, I opted to take it easy. My hip was unusually sore so I took some Aleve and rested. In the evening, I made two more loaves of Irish Soda Bread and some Irish Cream Mint cookies – a recipe I had gotten from my sister, Theresa.

* Update! I found the ice scraper in another box this afternoon.

Ash Wednesday – 2019

Ash Wednesday this year was a bit unusual for me on several accounts. The most obvious one is that it is my first one in “retirement”, so I actually had time to reflect on its meaning. This year, Ash Wednesday occurred during Delbarton’s spring break, so there was no communal Ash Wednesday service with the school. This meant that, for the monastic community, ashes would first be distributed during the daily conventual Mass at 5:00 p.m. It seemed odd to go the whole day without receiving ashes. The final thing that set this Ash Wednesday apart was my needing to go to the wake of a high school classmate’s mother. The family was holding the wake nearby from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Normally I would have gone right at 4:00 so that I could be back for Mass at 5, but because I suspected that some friends from high school would be there, I decided to wait and go after Mass.

The celebrant of our daily Mass is fond of imposing ashes in a serious way, so I had a very healthy smudge of soot on my forehead as I got in the car to head to the funeral home. However, this being a good Irish Catholic family, many of those at the wake also had ashes and I did not feel self-conscious in my Roman collar and blackened forehead. As I suspected, there were two fellow classmates in attendance. I caught up with them after greeting the family. One was leaving shortly to drive to Philadelphia to await the arrival of a grandchild. We chatted briefly and then he left. My other classmate mentioned that a few others had already been and were at a local establishment. Did I want to go with him to say hello. I did, but hesitated at the thought of going into a bar in Roman collar on Ash Wednesday. I wanted to see my friends, though; so, I agreed and went.

Walking into the bar did feel odd. Soon, however, we were all sitting together laughing and swapping old war stories. I ordered a beer but declined the offer of food. I was skating close to the edge, but I wasn’t prepared to break the fast. I was reminded of an article that another monk had shared with me about a community of monks in Bavaria, who, in the 16th century, observed a so-called “beer fast”. They forwent solid food for the period of Lent and sustained themselves by drinking only a fortified beer. I guess if it was good enough for them, I should be OK. Eventually I needed the men’s room and as I was returning to the table, a young man passed me and said, “Happy Lent, Father!” “Thanks”, I replied thinking to myself, “I don’t think anyone has ever wished me a happy Lent before.” And why not? For us Christians, this should be a joyous time of preparation for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection. But I believe that I, like most Christians I know, approach Lent with a kind of grim resolve. I understand and accept the worth of the Lenten discipline, but it’s hardly an occasion for joy.

As a part of my personal Lenten discipline, I subscribed to an online service that would deliver a Lenten meditation to my inbox each day during Lent. The one for Ash Wednesday came back to me as I drove home from the bar with the greeting of “Happy Lent, Father!” still playing over and over in my head. The writer of the meditation reflected on the Gospel text for Ash Wednesday observing, “the Gospel itself shifts gears into something resembling comic relief or satire, where we are chided into remembering that our actions must be focused on inward change rather than public ostentation. On the one day that our faces are liturgically and publicly smeared with ashes, we are then told to wash our faces so no one will know we are fasting. On the one day when so many people come to public services without any church obligation to do so, we are told not to pray in public where others can see us.” I was struggling with the obvious contradiction between what the Gospel instructs and the current practice of the Church. I was probably still wondering if I had given scandal by being in a bar on Ash Wednesday. Irish Catholic guilt – you never outgrow it!

I’d like to think that God gave me an answer to my doubts two days later when I opened the meditation for the Friday after Lent. On that day, the author was tackling the big question of fasting or feasting. The same question had been posed to Jesus by the disciples of John the Baptists. Jesus’ response was that the wedding guests (us) could not fast while the bridegroom (Jesus) was still with them. Now, Jesus does go on to say that the day will come when the bridegroom is taken away and then they will fast. The Church has always understood fasting as something that we do as a part of the “not yet” nature of our Christian existence. We believe that we have Christ’s abiding presence with us now, but because of the reality of sin, we do not fully experience that presence. Fasting is a way of addressing the reality of sin in our lives by making us more aware of the pull of our earthly nature on us.

Returning to the original question, however, we see that Jesus’ response to the question of fasting is quite remarkable. Richard Rohr says this, Jesus uses the occasion when the disciples of John question him about not fasting, and instead of being either didactic or defensive, he actually changes the subject and utterly reframes the question—as he often does. In fact, he introduces two lovely new words into the vocabulary, “wedding guests” and “bridegroom.” How amazing is that? It shows us that he is far from criticizing, justifying, defending, or imposing any discipline of fasting.
In fact, he is revealing here his most common metaphor for eternal life or the hereafter. And that metaphor is again and again a wedding banquet—at which he himself is God’s gracious host or “groom” and we are the marriage partner. It is daring language, but a worldview that he seems to be entirely comfortable with.

So, if the Lord himself was okay with feasting instead of fasting, maybe I shouldn’t worry so much about being in a bar with friends on Ash Wednesday.
